ABOUT PILATES
Between 1914 and 1926, Joseph Pilates began devising a system of exercises he called “Contrology,” which today is better known as “Pilates.” He began building his own unique exercise machines using springs from old-fashioned hospital beds. The equipment used in our Austin Pilates studio, are remarkably similar to the machines originally developed by Joseph Pilates. They're used in combination with the original Pilates techniques and exercise methods by centers around the world. We blend Pilates Mat and Pilates Equipment movements. The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) states that: "Pilates exercise focuses on the postural symmetry, breath control, abdominal strength, spine, pelvis and shoulder stabilization, muscle flexibility, joint mobility and strengthening through the complete range of motion of all joints instead of isolating the muscle groups the whole body is trained, integrating the upper and lower extremities with the trunk." Today it is acceptable to apply the principles of Pilates to all forms of movement, exercise, sport and daily life activities as Joseph Pilates himself did. The advantages of Pilates spring resistance training are as follows.  Excellent rate of strength gain.  Excellent rate of endurance gain.  Excellent strength gain over range of motion.  Excellent for time and result per training session.  Excellent for adaptability to specific muscular movement patterns (all sports).  Excellent for skill improvement concerning synchronized muscular patterns.  Excellent for least possibility of muscular soreness.  Excellent for least possibility of injury.  Excellent for rehabilitation, control and balance. In our Austin Pilates studio, we blend Mat Pilates and Machine Pilates to ensure reaching  and varying all elements of the training cycle to encourage your body and mind to embrace life.
